You should go with largest focal length you can afford to - it will give you more work space, therefore photography of living creatures will be far far easier, without making them run away.

I have Tamron 90mm f/2.8 and I can say that it's exceptional lens whatever to macro or occasional portrait with greater DoF (it's extremely sharp while stopped down). Distance between front lens and subject at 1:1 is enough to photograph insects, but I wouldn't pick any shorter lens above it. IMHO 90mm+ is perfect. So I wouldn't go with Sigma on your place.

As for noise - I haven't noticed it to be much above average. But focusing takes a while - all in all it's macro lens, designed mostly for MF. Lucky - in most occasions focus limiter solves the problem.
