Slightly OT: Zeiss Ikon - first impressions
I have been looking to get a backup body for the M9 and recently acquired the Zeiss Ikon. I got it for a song - under $800 - and have been really impressed. It is not well built as a Leica M but it is beautifully constructed by any other measure (far better than the Leica X1 for example). It is certainly a camera that one can take pride in owning. I also enjoy that it is 20% lighter than an M9/M7 and a bit thinner.
The viewfinder is the biggest revelation - the best I have ever used and is noticeably better than the M9's. Focusing is a breeze, even with Summilux or 90mm lenses. There are a few problems - the film advance/rewind is over complicated and setting film speed could be easier. The camera really would benefit from a motor drive and DX coding in my view. But overall very positive.
I encourage people to consider this camera as a backup to a Leica M or even a replacement.
