... I was less happy with my manual focusing skills and the attempted application of the lens (any manual focus lens in my case) to take photos of my children, who -never- stayed put. If you have patient or static subjects (or if you're just very good at manual focusing) then that won't be a problem for you.

I completely agree with the above statement. The only strategy which worked for me was rapid fire while continuously adjusting the focus. With that approach, I'd get 1/10 that combined perfect focus, and the kids doing something cute. Not a great way to be shooting, obviously.

I've rented the 70-200VRII on a few occasions, and it seemed to nail the focus every on every shot, even when my kids were at their most "creative". I guess that's the value of SWM focusing.
