the long zoom EXR family shoot out ...

I had the same thoughts. That is a lot of purple! I was hoping that the F300 would have as good as performance as the HS10. That cam seems to have very little PF so I had thought Fuji/Fujinon had developed a way to improve on this area. Sadly not true.

No matter, as I have ceased considering at all the F300EXR because of the mindblowing X100 that has been announced! My dream camera has been made by Fujifilm!

Um ... let's not forget that the F70 and F80 have CA quite rarely ... I have not done any serious testing for CA ... and you guys are foaming at the mouth along with Paul and Dave over the first shot I took at 24mm :-)

There is very little in common between a 24-360 and a 35mm fixed lens :-)

Uh, please, please dont lump me within that group. Please!

My F70 PF's all the time at wide angle setting. Just a tiny amount of contrast is all it takes. That is it's weakest point IMO.

Very very true. As you can see though, my wants and desires firmly lie in the 35mm end of the spectrum.

Thanks also for that, I too shoot mainly at the wide end. From your earlier comment would I be right in deducing that the new A/F feature is fast but not quite DSLR performance?
Hard to say what this AF is like ... seems fast, but does not stun me next to the F70 and F80 ... seems to have its share of errors too ...

I will have to craft a test specifically for AF to see if I can figure out how reliable and fast it is next to the others ...
As I wrote in another thread, I didn't see much difference in the AF performance between the F70 and F300, with the only caveat being that test shots were done on a slightly overcast day. Bright daylight may be what the F300EXR needs. On the other hand, in some very casual testing indoors at near the minimum focusing distance and at greater distances but in very low lighting, the F70 focused pretty well on all shots but the F300 confirmed focus several times (about 5% or slightly more) when focus clearly failed. For shooting in normal situations the F300 did very well, but I'm still waiting to see what the F300's PD AF is all about.

Kim, thanks for your F300EXR reviews. I especially enjoy your samples involving trees, which they don't seem to have in London, or perhaps in all of the entire UK. Just heath and moors, I guess. Or buildings and junk in London. Here in CA especially along creeks, we also have trees, so your samples are indicative of results I would actually see.

I've just received my F300exr. :D
First impressions (compared to F30 & F31fd):
  • It seems I'm not going to loose too much against F31fd in terms of noise (maybe also better for chroma noise) though something more in terms of details. My very first impression is that I'm not going to lose more than half a stop about iso performances;
  • Videos are on the dark side compared to the older models and it's visible it suffers the low light showing more digital noise. The audio seems to be good but I wait for a better Kim's test in some concert :)
Even if I lose something in some critical situation I guess for generic night landscapes, if I don't do pixel peeping, the amazing range of features will do the gap in favour of F300exr.

Naturally, I will have to shot much more pics in order to have a better feeling and knowledge of the new jewel (and also in finding some cons) ;)

Isn't there some strange power saving option where you can choose between Bright Display or Hi Speed A/F setting? Does this make any difference to A/F speeed, either way?

I've written about that one before ... it is a range limiter of sorts and causes misfocus under surprising situations ... like shooting through windows. I don't use it.

I just tried it on the F300 and it makes no difference to focus when going back and forth from a few inches to 10 feet.

The F80 against the F300 shows little real difference ... the F80 will hunt a touch more, but both are done in 1/2s or less much of the time.

I did a quick test just to see what it does ... much has improved:

The good:
  • Excellent zoom speed ... slow like the Panny and focus almost keeps up. Nice.
  • Excellent audio! Much less muffled than the F80. This thing is a real contender to replace the Panny now. To be confirmed under rock concert conditions of course :-)
  • Focus seems very quiet on the film. Well done Fuji.
  • Video quality appears to have improved a bit. This needs testing.
The bad:
  • Same awful codec!

The last entry in the Setup Menu is Power Management which has three options, Power Save, Quick AF and Clear Display. I keep my F70 and F300 set to Quick AF. LCD Brightness is at the top of the 3rd page of the Set-Up menu for both cameras. I suppose I should check the AF speed using one of the other settings but so far I've only used Quick AF. This setting is probably only used for Contrast Detect AF, not the F300's Phase Detect AF.
