This is _not_ a rage against the price, just a question:

We have (@1.4AFS):

24mm - $2200
35mm - $1800
50mm - $400
85mm - $1700

All things being equal , 35mm can't be 4,5times as expensive to R&D+manufacture (or can it?).

So, that leaves out other possibilities:

  • Smaller market for 35mm

  • 35mm is a better lens with much more R&D behind it.

  • 35mm is valued against competition, not cost.

  • Other ideas?

So what do you think?

I of course tens to think it a combination (geewiz Batman), with a heavy reason in paragraph 2 (better lens/optics). This leads me to what i have discussed before (and gotten heat over), why is it that the don't believe in making a similarly 'great' 50mm (will it be a 1.2?)?
