i've recently been thinking of jumping back into DSLR from m43 for improved image quality. the feature i'm most interested in after a larger sensor is the articulating screen. unfortunately, the DPReview Buying Guide does not (currently) have this as a feature to search/filter.

is the 60D the best of the bunch right now with the articulating screen? how does it compare with the sony A55? are there any other aps-c cams i'm missing with this feature?

Since both cameras are just announced - there is little real information - particularly so for the A55 using a completely new mirro technology. As a Canon forum, despite all the whines about the 60D not being a real upgrade from the 50D, you can expect the Canon to get the vote. A key cost factor is the price of lenses and there is much more choice for Canon compared to Sony.

You do not say what your existing kit/experience is or what your intended usage is. Articulated screens are great in certain situations: using camera at an angle for e.g. macro shots; or avoiding refelections when eyepiece not usable/accessible. So far, these have been available ona few compats/superzooms. Latest example being the Panasonic FZ100. See DPR Panaonic forum - where some very good real life images are now being posted - including some excellent macro shots.

The Canon looks good to me. Very hard to get hold of now but the Panasonic L10 is an excellent D-SLR and has the same type of articulating screen as the 60D.

Why are you recommending a 2007/2008 camera? It's not that it's bad, but technology improves years after years (sometimes in the wrong direction indeed ;) )

But anyway, if no budget reason apart, you should always go for a recent camera when buying new (and read reviews before buying!)

I'm a Canon user but I had an extended play with a Nikon D5000 a few months ago and was quite impressed with the concept, although I would never swap it for my 7D. I would always prefer to look through the eyepiece but Live View certainly has its uses and, if you are trying to photograph something from a low level, an articulated screen can obviously be really useful. The D5000 is articulated at the bottom, the Canon 60D is articulated on the side. The former may present problems when the camera is mounted on a tripod which you may want to take into consideration.

The 60D, whatever anyone says about the lack of MA, has the same sensor as the 7D. So, I would expect the IQ to be similar using the same lenses. Go for it!

processor has only 1/2 the power, and esp. AF system of 60d is
from another era (but it will be sort of OK for portraits or another
static scenes) = not match at all :(

that said - I'd gladly buy something akin to 7d2 with ALL the features
it already got plus:
  • articulated screen (preferably on the side and with option to tilt in two directions);
  • min and max user definable bounds in auto ISO;
  • possibility to key in EV for auto iso in M-mode (instead of rather useless metering it performs right now);
  • interchangeable focusing screens (minor thing, as the 7d can be persuaded to accept III-rd party screens, although with a bit of trouble).

I'm currently shooting an Olympus ep1, so I won't make a decision until after photokina and the new m43 cameras come out. But I moved from canon a year ago (space and size reasons for a bicycling trip), and I miss the IQ. Of course, I went from the 5D to a much smaller sensor. Nothing against the Oly, a great little camera, but I've found myself bumping up against its limitations recently. I would have gone with the panny gh1 at the time, but it wasn't available.

Just a piece of info.... there are some tripods where the quick release plate edges are bevelled, that wont caus problems with D5000 Lcd.
