The farther the distance is, the lesser lens travel is required. Imagine turning the focus ring 1mm near infinity might throw the subject OOF, but turning the same amount at closeup distance might not mean much at all. Just study the focus ring scale & you will see what I mean. In fact, focus screen calibration is also done with virtual infinity target too in factories.
