D40 or D5000 as first DSLR?

THanks for this insight. I've been trying to determine how to break into the DSLR and so far from my research/fiddling around with in-store cameras, I've only narrowed it down to a Nikon. Which one? I don't know. I've been tossing around the d5000 and the d3100 (that's about my price range). I have considered a used D70, D80, and a D3000 as well, but since I'm more or less an "educated beginner" with photography, I'm going to shy away from complex "thought" cameras for the time being.

I might just add D40 to my list too, thanks to your words. I don't care one bit about getting "the newest shiniest toy" and constantly upgrading, I'd rather upgrade on what I need, rather than what's the next whatchamagadget added to an already perfectly functional camera. If the D40 is as good a camera as it seems, I'm in for a treat.
