People are missing the point of the 60D

I have 7d which is exactly what I wanted in an upgrade.
It uses the e3 battery like the 60d.

Purchased 2 batteries and a charger on ebay for $19. Works as well as the Canon batteries. I use 2 batteries in the grip--canon an generic brands together, no problem. The generic's can't use the canon charger, but comes with a nice charger. The charger also has a cord for charging for a car, which is nice. Also charges from 120-240vac.

I would pay the extra for this model, over the rebel, if I were in market for a rebel.

swivel is the thing. hope we keep seeing it on canon's new models
The 60D is not a 40D or 50D upgrade, and it's not competition for the 7D.

The 60D is a 450D, 500D or 550D upgrade for a modest price increase. It's launch suggested retail price is $1099 which means it'll probably be under $1000 within 6 months or so, just like the 50D is at the very end of its sales lifetime. The 50D launched for $200 more 2 years ago. So, it's $300 more than 550D and $200 less than the 50D, using cost at launch as the measure.

Really, it's just like DPReview said it was - a new category for Canon. Sort of a super Rebel while the 7D is the new semi-pro category.

Right now, I can get new 450D (this is what I have) for €500 -that's exactly how much I've payed for 450D two years ago. The thing is, for whatever reason, photo equipment prices went up in last two years (or didn't decreased on existing products, as expected).

Now.. if I'd be interested on video, I would probably allready own 550D -meaning: being out of money (meaning: not an upgrade candidate). If at all, I'm interested on having (upgrading to) better photo camera -in this case, that wouldn't be 60D, but 50D (for less money).

From this standpoint, price increase (to get 60D) isn't modest at all: it's more than double of 450D.

And saying 50D was more expensive (when introduced) than 60D now, doesn't help either. I mean, five years ago, what camera could we get for €500?

IMO, 60D isn't worth the price -as long 550D (for video) and 50D (for overall quality) exist.
The 50D launched for $200 more 2 years ago.
-but at that time , it was worth $200 more (taking competition/features into account). Of course, my opinion is just one among thousands others.

Agree. As it seems, differences between xxxD and xxD somehow dimished: xxD series has better viewfinder, a bit better AF system and is a bit bigger.

But 60D will find buyers, of course. Mainly those who find Rebel series too small or/and need video no matter what.

Me? I'll pass on "upgrading" right now. But if 50D price drops for another €100, who knows... :)

Greetings,
Bogdan
I agree,

the step up from the 550d is quite obvious. I'd really really like the rear wheel, the top lcd and of course the swivel display. For people who have to decide between 550d and 60D the latter's spec-list sounds very attractive. If you owned a rebel model before, you might even applaud to the smaller size and the loss of the metal body. Not everybody likes to carry around something as heavy as the 50d.

But in the end, it makes no difference. At this price-point the 60D cannot count as alternative to a rebel. It's just too far away from it, especially in Europe, where you have to pay an extra of at least 300 € (almost 400 $!!!!).

For me that means to stick with the rebel series and enviously look at the competition that hasn't completely forgotten what value for money means....

I am frankly shocked at the whining going on in this forum about the 60D. Canon is clearly seeing tiers in the market and, from a feature/price standpoing, it has slotted the 60D into a new tier between the entry level 550D and the 7D. That makes sense. For the consumer there is choice as you move from tier to tier 550D, 60D, 7D, 5DII and 1DIV. This displays a logical progression of features and prices.

What do the crybabies want? A 1DIV for the price of the 60D? Ain't going to happen.

Do I want to buy the 60D? No. I have a 7D and 5DII. But just maybe a 5DIII will come along next year.

After a lot of thinking, I'd have to agree. Cameras are cameras and names are names. Words and names are flexible depending on what someone names something, hardware isn't, it is what it is.
To me the new upgrade path is Rebel-60d
xxd-7d (or maybe 60d for some)

Of course some flexibility, since some present xxd users may like the 60d's lighter weight. articulating screen, and video capabilities.

For those who think the 7d is a steep price, when I bought a 10d way back

when, I paid around what a 7d is going for now. If I'm correct a Rebel then was around the same price as a 60d will be shortly.

I had started out being disappointed by the 60d as a continuation of the xxd line, until I realized that it wasn't...and that names are just names.
