Nice but does it upgrade from A550 sensor in high ISO? Or it just add video capture?

Exactly. Maybe it's the same, maybe better? It would be interesting to know.

Of course, any comparison should be done with both cameras under the same conditions.

I've been comparing against my a100, and it's just silly how much better the Nex 5 is. But I probably could have gotten similar IQ with the a550.

High ISO wise the NEX-5 out perform the A-mount. Remember all these shots were done with kit lens. It would definitely perform even better with high quality lenses when they are available.

From everything I have seen, I think it's close. Nex is a little better probably, but A550 itself is a huge jump up from A100 (and even A2xx/A3xx). I am curious how even the newer 16mp sensor (rumor) would do. That might be a slight jump up from Nex given it's probably newer technology. The bad news is that Nikon might get the 16MP sensor in D90 replacement before it appears in A7xx.

(D300 was released before A700 too).

It gives me the thrilled to shoot again. With A550 now I am able to confidently shoot at ISO 400 to stop the movement by the wind on plant and flower, to take pict with the slow lens like the 70-300 SSM and STF. To be able to shoot handheld with Steady Shot without tripod/monopod, etc. Put simply it is as good (to my eyes) as ISO 100 in KM 5D. I expect the next Sony sensor to improve more.

There is something wrong with the dog photos. Look at the ISO 400 shot. It is a mess. The teeth are blown out? Out of focus? The hair on the head is a mess, looks grainy in the details.

DOF too shallow? Plane of focus at wrong place?

Have you ever tried shooting pics of a lively small dog ? - if you have & have got some better pics then please let us see them.

Can't say that I have. Did have a cat once but the coyotes ate it. But seriously, what is going on with the dog photos. None of them look good. First, the hair looks "noisy" in all the photos, then the teeth are washed out, etc.

sorry to say this but they are useless.

you should test high ISO where you really need high ISO.

So it is agreed?

The pictures of the dog are a mess at all ISOs?

I have a gallery. Look at anything you want. Your comments will be appreciated.

Look, I am not criticizing the photographer. Do you mean to say the the ISO 400 shot of the dog is typical NEX ISO 400 output?

I don't think so. I have seen some gorgeous NEX photos on this site and all the dog photos look like a mess. Something seems wrong.

Do you really believe that any of the dog photo's are acceptable? Look at the ISO 1600 shot. Do you think that is OK?

Now you mention it I see what you mean. What a horrible camera. What are these people thinking? The name tag on this camera is all wrong. It says Sony, and Sony stands for bad High ISO so it must be bad!

Oh, when it said Conon, Nikon or Leica on the name plate, it was a great picture, high quality at low light, just great, but Sony? It is of a lesser quality then the yesteryears newspaper in the garbage!

Come on Tedolf even the 12800 picture is better then the 3200 ISO picture form my Minolta 7D from just a couple of years back!

Show me any high ISO pictures made with an €750,- camera that are better then this, noice wise.

When you aree talking about composition etc, you are right, not very interesting pictures af the dog....
