The 28-300L is large and expensive. And on a crop body (7D, 50D, etc) it is about 44mm effective on the wide end -- not good for a walkaround lens IMO, and too heavy for my walking

If you're willing to go EF-s, consider a 17-55 f/2.8 IS plus a 70-200 f/4 IS. That would give you better range.

Or, for a travel lens, consider the 18-200IS -- equiv. to 28-320mm on a Canon crop body. I've used that lens extensively, on 7D and 40D, and it gets surprisingly good results and is a one-lens walkaround solution.
