Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 replace a Canon 50mm f1.8?

I listed the Tamron in another one of my threads on standard zooms. I was initially planning on getting a standard zoom lens and the Canon 50mm prime but researching and looking at more samples of the Tamron I can see that it is very good even at f2.8. Since this is realistically the highest aperture I would be willing to use on the Canon 50mm due to sharpness, am I right in assuming that the 17-50mm could replace the prime?

If this is correct it is a bit of a shame as I was looking forward to the 50mm prime but may as well kill two birds with one stone.

Thanks

P.S. Some samples of the Tamron if anyone is interested:
