As many of you know I have been fixing cameras for awhile, just for some thing to do, not a business by any means, as I give the restored cameras away.

Right now,I have the need for a LCD screen and a door cover for a c-740 that I got in the box of six cameras, so I have been on ebay looking and bidding for a broken c-740.

Tonight I was looking about on ebay and as the c-750 is a twin almost to the c-740, I was on the ebay listings for the c-750.

Here is where I need some serious input from you people, like a arm about the shoulder.

I came across this listing and as it was buy it now, I bought it. Confirmed by PayPal.

It is a working c-750 complete with a case, a FL-50 Flash with a case, a Olympus telephoto lens (1.4) and case, a memory card, a couple of filters etc. The price was listed for what a used quick sale c-750 is bringing on ebay. Very cheap.

My problem is with me. Did I just get a great deal? Was the seller not aware of what he was selling? Maybe an Estate deal? The used FL-50 is worth double what I paid for the whole ebay deal.

In October this year, my nephew is getting married. He has a pro photographer hired, but has asked me to do the table pictures and candids. I plan on using my c-8080wz and the FL-50 will be a big plus if it works with the c-8080wz.

Now why do I still feel uncomfortable about my ebay deal? I do not like getting ripped off and avoid doing so to others.

I own an FL-50 has been replaced by the FL-50R, I believe. It was about $450 new here in the US. If in good working shape, it will be a very nice flash with TTL.

HOWEVER, if I remember correctly, it is not a good match for the 8080 (that would have been the FL 40, which I see at KEH excellent+ condition for $119)

I'm no flash expert. But an FL in very good condition is probably worth $250+

Paul,

Since you paid the price asked, and I'm sure you did not try to bargain down, I think you did not "rip off" the seller.

People have lots of different motivations for selling things, and over the years I've noticed that surprisingly often the monetary return is not even among the main reasons, let alone the main reason.

If the seller were a minor, or in some way noticeably impaired in a way that a buyer thought might work, unknowlingly, to the seller's disadvantage in the deal, then perhaps the buyer could reasonably intrude on what should remain a seller's sole responsibility -- setting price. If there's not that kind of situation, then a buyer intruding on that responsibility could be seen as patronizing the seller -- treating the seller as a child or an incompetent.

Sleep well.

about anything I buy from Ebay 'til I receive the merchandise. Hope you got the deal you think you did, but you won't know for sure 'til you test it.

I got my C-3040, with a 128 mb smart media card, for $30.00, on a "buy it now" basis. The cards alone typically go for at least $25.00. Like getting the camera, which seems to be operating perfectly, for $5.00. The seller set the price, I accepted it, and as far as I know we both ended up happy.

Thanks to both of you for the kind words

Here at the apartment complex where I now live, most of the people are elderly and some need a helping hand at times. This plus the fact that for the last two years of my wife's life, she slowly slipped away, first with mild Dementia and finally into on-off Alzheimer's. I miss her very much, but I am ashamed to say I would not care to go thru that again.

In all probability I am over sensitive to protecting those that are not as swift as they once were.

In 4-5 days I will find out what kind of a deal I got into with this ebay purchase. Maybe I got a bunch of junk, but the display pictures on ebay looked good.

The c-740 camera that I am fooling with takes pictures and I am very impressed with the flower pictures I have taken with it. It is my plan if I can complete the camera for the missing door and get the LCD working again is to give it to my niece. She takes a lot of pictures with her very little P&S Ca##n camera and will be very surprised at the picture quality of the c-740.

Again, thanks for your reply and even though I do not reply much here on OTF,I have enjoyed the pictures that both of you have posted..

If you have the latest 8080 firmware (78 if memory serves), the FL-50 will work ok. When I still owned my C-8080WZ, I tried it with both FL-36 and FL-50 flashes. IMHO, the FL-50 makes the 8080 a little top heavy, and I preferred using the FL-36.

The focus assist light won't be on long enough for the 8080 get a focus lock, but I believe that is true for the built in focus light as well.

Thanks for the reply. My c-8080wz is v78 so nothing left to do but try it out.

How's the "camera in a box" project working out?
At the moment, it is going a little slow, but I have several projects I'm starting to think about. One isn't really related to the camera in a box, but I'm trying to figure out a way to make my flash work with the VF-2/SEMA-1 that block the flash hot-shoe.

If it was a buy it now deal, the seller more than likely needed quick $. They would have sold it for the same amount regardless of who bought it, so I wouldn't worry about it at all.
The FL50 is an excellent flash & I know you'll put it to good use :-)

It’s good not to take unfair advantage of others. But, you must remember that no exchange is ever “equal,” in a sense. For example, the car dealer wants your money more than he wants his car. You want his car more than your money.

Generally speaking, if both parties to the exchange are happy, it’s a fair exchange. Apparently, the seller was happy with the “buy it now” price, I hope you are happy with what you receive.

I don't think you acted unethically.

The FL-50 works with current bridge cameras with hotshoe and DSLRs. Therefore it is a bargain.

I have been using my C-750UZ between 2003 an 2007. During that time there was nothing that was substantially more sutable for my needs. The C-770UZ was still a 4MP camera, and it has a low capacity Li-ion battery.

However, now I would not buy a C-750 again. It misbehaved when I operated it with damp hands. Iit sucked in dust before the replacement of the inner front shell, and the internal sharpening gave broad edges, even at a setting of -2.

So the price should reflect that its value as a photographic instrument is no longer clear-cut.

Hi Paul,

In terms of what you got for the amount you payed, it sounds like it was an excellent deal for you. Quite apart from the flash, the TCON-1.4 is also worth bagging.

We live in a consumer society - which means there will always be a tier of the cimmunity for whom a 6-year old gadget+accessories no longer have any value, or suit their needs. On the other hand, not everyone gets emotionally attached to electronic devices, or want a drawer-full of clutter. So they put the whole lot up for sale. You benefitted by getting something that you like and the seller benefitted by getting rid of something they didn't want any more.

With eBay and other similar online auctions, there is always always an element of doubt as to the nature of the sale, the authenticity of items etc - but I'd like to believe that most people out there are not crooks, nor fools.

Who will ever believe , that I could get an portable multimeters calibrator,
for 26 EUR shipped ( 30$ ) ...
when it costs as new about 400 Pounds , or 999$ in USA .

Everything build 10 years back , are considered as old useless technology,

by the scope of the modern consumer , who is dieing to get the largest and bigger plasma TV set of 2010 .

I think that every one, who is able to evaluate correctly the true value of the technology , he will continue to find on ebay , amazing opportunities .

(Paul : The mini package, arrived safely .. 1000 Thanks )

Michael, Aja2, John C., Henry F, Photophile and Olyboy thanks for your reply and comment.

Since my original post, I have learned a bit about the seller, so I now feel better with the fact that maybe I did not take advantage.

Now I wonder what kind of shape this gear will be in. Should be here next Friday.

As I mentioned previously, I was on ebay looking for a broken camera to buy in order to fix one that I had here. I don't really need a c-750uz, but the FL-50 caught my eye.

Speaking of broken or repaired cameras, there is roughly 25-30 cameras or pieces thereof here at the apartment. Counting my own cameras, there are 9 cameras working, 6 UZI's given away, a couple of other OLY's also given away. Now if I re-phrased this statement, it might sound like a Christmas song.

I should really start a "clean out the camera cabinet" I do not need that many cameras.

Back to the ebay seller. Found out that he/she has a 560 number on ebay, so that tells me of previous ebay experience. But judging from some of the terminology in his listing and then looking at the attached pictures, his area of expertise is not cameras.

But thanks to all of you for your response. You made my guilt feeling disappear, being replaced by the usual wait and see for what you spent money on.
