Love my G9!
I stuffed it in my backpack on a hike/bike trip this past weekend.

I would have loved to have my XTI and a couple lenses but it just was not practical as portability was an issue. Steep terrain, changing weather conditions and learning to use clipless pedals in the dirt.

This is the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest on the Arizona-New Mexico border. I followed a jeep trail up to a ridge for a better view of the sunrise and came upon a herd of big horn sheep.

Although they were somewhat wary of my presence, they made no move to leave and I stayed with them, at a distance, for about 1 1/2 hours while they grazed.

And they even relaxed a bit.

Nifty photos. Love the first one and I'd gladly put it as my desktop background - heh. You guys have beautiful nature there. Thanks for sharing.

It's not stupid; it's advanced.

Fun to see these pics. Thanks. #2 and #4 are really nice (especially #4). They caught my attention.

That's really a moment to remember when you come across a group of wild, beautiful animals. We have big horn sheep in our area as well. One time last year I quietly watched a herd of 26 come down the hill toward me as I sat at the base of a big pine tree with my trusty G9. Before I knew it, they completely surrounded me and grazed for 30 minutes within 10-50 feet as I sat motionless in their midst - afraid to move a muscle. It was a beautiful sight, but very unnerving. I didn't like the looks of those giant horns and I didn't want to spook them with any movement. Oh, and the funny (sad, really) part is that when I tried to fire up the G9, the battery was completely dead. Anyway, the point of this story is that I really liked and appreciated your photos, and I agree with the title of your post!

There were a few times when they would square up to me and snort a bit. I wondered what I would do if they decided to charge me. I guess my last photo would have shown a blurry, off kilter image of ram horns from 2 feet away.

Thanks all for the feedback.

very nice captures. i know the feeling to unexpectedly come upon bighorns as it's almost a religious experience. of all the camera truism statements yours is my #1 also the similar "the best camera you have is the one with you. thats why i went from P&S to dslr & now back to a g11 & s90 so i miss nothing now. thanks for posting your fine shots - you got me itchin' to get out again now!

Nice photos but im confused about the thread title.

Its not like the G9 is just a cheap P&S and i cant see any reason why it wouldn't get shots like these.

There have been a few threads where people have had to use a mobile phone camera or a real cheap P&S and have stated its better than nothing but to have a G9 is a luxury for some people.

Maybe its just me not getting it, no offense meant and i do love the shots.

I thought the same thing when I saw the thread title. I was waiting to read about having an old 1.2 megapixel in hand, not a G9.

Nevertheless, these are very nice photos. I too have a G9 and it takes excellent photos in my opinion. Since I bought the S90 however the G9 stays home a lot more.

Thanks for the nice pics!

My best, Tom

I agree the G9 is not a typical P&S. I buy all my camera gear and most of my "toys" used. I'm cheap that way.

The title was a reaction to standard threads I see here when I pop in fron time to time:

1. When is Canon coming out with the G27?
2. "I'm through with Canon. I'm going to switch to the XYZ987"

And it was also a response to another thread where the poster was taken to task for not bringing his DSLR when he went on a run.

Very nice photos! The G9 is very nice and it is built like a tank. Mine was dropped a couple of times on rocks. It now has a slight crack on the LCD screen but still takes excellent photos.
