Panorama lexicon

I have a friend who took several shots in his camera's portrait orientation and stitched them together into a panorama. The panorama's visual orientation, e.g. subject, is a side-to-side landscape. However, he called the image a 'vertical panorama'. I took issue with this. He claims that 'vertical' describes his camera's orientation, and thus the shots themselves, whereas I believe that the final image is a horizontal panorama, taken in portrait mode, and that "professional panorama photographers" use horizontal/vertical to describe their camera orientation, not portrait/landscape. This sounds both imprecise and confusing.

My English degree and 30 years of journalistic experience would seem to suggest that both he, and 'professional panorama photographers' , need to clarify their nomenclature.

Opinions?
