I've used the "snow" mode in winter and was really pleased with the results, so I'm likely to "set and forget" to that mode in the future when I am out in the white stuff.
One thing that bothered me about the scene modes was the fact that I never was really able to find a proper explanations for exactly what sorts of compensations each of them were bringing into play. While I would not be adverse to using some of these "dummy" modes, I would feel a lot less dumb if I felt I had some idea of the sorts of adjustments they were actually making for me.
If you search around on this forum you might find some info on them though.
