70-300VR focuses past infinity - is that bad?

I finally had a chance to spend more (not much more) time with my recently acquired 70-300VR, and I noticed that it focuses past the infinity. In other words, if I use AF to focus on the clouds, the clouds are sharp but there are a few degrees of turn left in the focusing ring. If I turn the focusing ring as far as it goes, nothing in the frame is sharp.

I am wondering if this is a sign of a bad copy. Am I sacrificing some of the close focusing ability because the lens range of motion is shifted? Is it an indication of any other problem with the lens? Or is it just a normal behavior for any lens that I never paid attention to before? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
