Is the 50mm 1.8 still useful on a APS-C sensor?

I have the Tamron 17-50mm and the 50mm f/1.8. Both say 50mm, but on the Tamron the actual focal length reduces a lot when you get closer to the subject. Imo, that makes the 50mm prime much better for your typical half body portraits. That said, I don't think the 50mm is very versatile on a 1.6x format. My Tamron lens is way more useful overall. I'm usually shooting in the 17 - 30mm range anyway.
