The primary reason I own a DSLR is to be able to take the pictures I want on those kinds of trips. I don't bring everything on every trip. For Paris, I would be fine with my a700 and 16-80. It and my lightweight tripod, fit nicely in a backpack we take with us during our day trips. The pack also holds my wife's purse and a drink and snack. For our recent Italy trip, I did squeeze in a 24 1.8 for low light shots indoors.

I would make do with a good P&S, but for me, 75% of the use of my DSLR is when on international travel...
