Week in Paris - Which camera

We're off to Paris for a week at the end of August.
My wife doesn't want me to take my full camera gear (A700, lenses, tripod).

And frankly, after having spent a couple of weeks with my HX5V on a few trips to other cities, I'm starting to question whether I really need to take my DSLR kit.

Since most of these photos are snapshots to display on monitor screens as slideshows and not to be printed at larger sizes, what would I be giving up if I went with just the compact?

I have to say I did not envy the people I saw lugging around their gear in Venice in the crowds and heat and I wonder if the results they got were really worth the extra effort.

Of course, for other work like landscape or portrait and macro photography for example, the extra detail of the A700 would be worth it me, so don't get me wrong and think that I'm questioning the value of the DSLR for "serious" work.

Anybody else leaving their DSLRs behind when going on trips like this?

Would any of the following pics be "better" if I had taken them with a DSLR? All taken handheld.
