Hi all,

I am looking for a good magnifying eyepiece for my new D5000. Something along these lines (I have now sold my Pentax system) - http://www.adorama.com/IPXOME53.html

I loved it on the Pentax as it helped keep my nose off the lcd while the rubber cup isolated any stray light, making the already large and bright K20D viewfinder a joy to use.

Is there an equivalent for the Nikon D5000?

I found this on ebay. It's not a magnifier, but I would get it if it's compatible.

Cheers,
Keith

There are models that are adjustable up to x1.3 on Ebay.

You mount it and twist the eye cup... it elongates and has 1.3 magnification max.
If corners are cut I suppose you could turn it down a notch.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm leaning towards the DK-21M. Willing to risk it. Reviews state that the eyecup is too hard. I plan on replacing the hard plastic eyecup with the D5000 supplied DK-24 or if that does not fit, the DK-21. Here are my options -

Option 1 - DK-21M ($24 ebay, use the magnification, live with the hard eyecup)

Option 2 - DK-21M minus its eyecup + DK-24 eyecup (supplied with my D500)

Option 3 - DK-21M minus its eyecup + DK-21 eyecup (buy, cheap)

Any suggestions?

Can't help you on the decision. You might take your options post to another forum if you don't get a response here. Try Fred Miranda or NikonCafe. Nikonians is good, but you'd have to sign up for a subscription--maybe a trial one at least. Good luck. Please post back with your decision after trying it out, so others might profit from your experience. Good luck.

Just bought a DK-21M off eBay. Will post a review when it gets here. Hope it fits, fingers crossed :)

Please let us know how it turns out. I am potentially interested in following suit.

I have installed the DK-21M on my D5000, and it works just fine. Slight vignetting is present but the magnification and increased face-to-LCD distance makes it worthwhile. I can still see the viewfinder bottom information display clearly. This might differ for you depending on your eye, eyeglasses and peering angle.

As mentioned by other reviewers, the eyecup is hard and small. So, the first thing I did was remove it and slide my D5000 DK-24 eyecup on to the magnifier. To do this you will have to -

1. Remove the 4 tiny screws and dis-assemble the DK-21M eyepiece.
2. Gently pry out / pull out the hard eyecup. It is mildly glued, so be careful.
3. Re-assemble the two parts without the eyecup (keep this aside).
4. Slide in the magnifier onto the camera viewfinder.
5. Slide the original eyecup (DK-24) on to the magnifier firmly till it clicks.
6. Re-adjust the diopter and you are good to go!

Love it. 30 bucks well spent :)

Cheers,
Keith

Hey, Keith, glad that worked out for you and thanks for giving instructions on how to disassemble the eyecup.

Thanks for following up, and thanks for leading the way. I'm going to try one.

I installed my DK-21M and you're right, the vignetting is pretty nominal. On the other hand I was not that impressed with the effect on the image, and for some reason it is less comfortable to have my eye pressed up against it, so the standard eyecup went back on. It was worth a shot.

I have one (DK-21M) on my Nikon D7000 and just took it off and tried it on my D5000, and it seems to work fine on there. As expected, a bit of vignetting, but nothing that you can't get used to.
