I´m not sure I understand what I see here. I am pretty experienced with DSLR, own a Sony A900 and used an A200 once, but I have a hard time evaluating the exmor sensor. I own a Fuji compact with that sensor and images look similar. I didn´t go for that comapct camera look (pretty blotchy, if not mushy images).

Conversion done with RPP, a little pp and resized in PS. Unsharp mask applied.
So what do you think, is this a keeper? Am I expecting too much?

you don't boost EV in this situation and whatever else you are doing in processing is adding noise. How much value did you Unsharp Mask?

It don't look right at all

Keep in mind that RPP does nothing in the way of luminance noise reduction. It's wonderful at extracting detail at the expense of a little grain.

Nice to hear from you again Pam , why the pictures of boring cars , where are your beautiful models !? I think the main problem here is slight under-exposure which means that the shadow areas have had to be forced a little which results in an unsatisfactory washing out of good blacks & this also emphasises noise as well.

The noise would respond to NR quite well but the shadows either have to be more dense or you have to re-shoot. I like the colour & the compositions although I would have liked the whole car to be seen in the first image.

Hi, I bought the nex for an upcoming trip to Thailand. I will have to test it side by side against my Fuji S5 which will also be used on that trip. I might try it in better conditions, but available light and street photography is what I bought it for.

The shadows were only lifted slightly. I have a feeling it is a lens issue. Those small lenses seemingly don´t resolve very well. The noise level is ok ...

probably these shots needed a bit positive exposure compensation (and dro off). you can adjust it back later in PP.

bloomoose what resolution are you comparing it to? It has exactly resolution I would expect for the specs and decent kit lenses.

It is a bit better than my D90 in resolution but it's not going to match any full frame camera in this scenario especially.

I'm not sure I understand the problem. :-) This looks great to me (albeit a bit oversharpened perhaps). Obviously resolution is not your problem -- the antenna in the last image shows pixel-level detail. Noise looks OK to me, dynamic range looks great. What is your complaint?

Edit: OK now I saw the ISO. I think you are pulling detail up from the shadows and then sharpen too much with a very small radius, which will make noise show up under these conditions. But it's hard to say without seeing what you do.

Well Pam I think that perhaps you are expecting too much , the A900 probably has spoiled you ? I hope that better E-Mount lenses will come for the NEX , good results should come with some legacy lenses provided that good manual focus can be achieved. The type of lighting in these photos is a challenge for any camera & it's my guess that you will get better results in different conditions.

Have a good time in Thailand.

Could you upload the original raw, it's quite difficult do give an opinion without seeing the original image.
Did you try LR3 also?
