Hi Tom,

You're close, but not quite there. Regular Sweep Panorama works by taking the center portion from a series of frames and blending them together.

3D Sweep Panorama takes two sets of slices, one from each edge of the frame, and assembles an independent panorama from each. By the time the panorama being assembled from the left slice catches up to the panorama being assembled from the right slice, the lens has moved. This creates the parallax effect.

This has the interesting upshot that the degree of parallax is somewhat user-controllable. A panorama taken at arm's length will have much stronger parallax than one taken from a tripod. A panorama taken using a specialised panoramic head would have no parallax, and therefore no 3D effect, whatsoever.

For a typical panorama taken at arm's length, the ideal subject distance is around 2m-10m, which provides a good parallax effect with a minimum of stitching errors. With a tripod, you could bring that down to, say, 50cm-5m.
