You definitely need to replace the cardboard core with something stronger. It is really just for shipping. Even paper will sag badly on cardboard cores.

The Manfrotto aluminum core is probably the best bet for strength with light weight. You could also use steel electrical conduit in an appropriate diameter, but that can get really heavy -- more than I'd want to trust to Autopoles. Or you might find aluminum tubing at a metal supplier.
