How can I recover missing text from a Word document?

Using Word 2000 I keep a diary and back it up occasionally. To my dismay today I have just found that at least the last ten pages of my document are inexplicably missing. I am sure I have not deleted them and there's nothing in the recycle bin.

Luckily my backup was on 15th June but the entries since then were important so I am very keen to try to recover them. The only explanation I can think of for the cause of this problem was my running a program called SmartDefrag a few days ago. I wonder if it has 'split' the file.

The Word document was some sixty pages long and now it is fifty one.

So far all I've tried is going back to a restore point but that achieved nothing so I undid it.

I would appreciate any suggestions for a way to recover the lost text which I save to a folder in My Documents on an internal 120GB drive on an XP machine. I'm off to bed now as its late so will respond tomorrow if any helpful soul should respond.

Many thanks.
