We lived in Mexico for 5 years (Isla Mujeres residents).

1. driving in Mexico is a challenge. Rules of the road are different, for example, a left flashing indicator from the vehicle in front of you could mean (a) it's OK to overtake on the left, or (b) I am about to turn left. Next: to make a left turn off the highway, you he to pull over to the right and wait, then swing left to your turn off.

2. In Mexico, there is Napoleonic law... you are guilty unless you can prove yourself innocent. A car accident can mean jail first, until you can prove you innocence.

Taxi or bus is the better route

Other than that, many great photo ops all the way down the Mayan Rivera, and on the old Mayan sites. Take a tour to the recently uncovered Mayan ruins, like Deziibanche.
