Hi,

it happened yesterday (not for a first time) after whole day shooting.

When I half press shutter button, AF works, subject is in focus, but after fully pressing shutter nothing happens = no photo. It happens randomly. 3 times it's ok, fourth time problem .. Can anybody help? Where could be problem? Thx

This use to happen to me all the time with my D70 I think it just might be your flash card. Are you using an older flash card or has it not been formatted in awhile? You should format your card before you use it every time.

I could be wrong, but that's what it sounds like to me!

Are you using cheap CF cards, so the data is slow to write to the buffer?

The new Kingston cards are terrible for this.

4 seems very low, but it is worth checking. The other thing is checking your shooting settings. It may be set to not allow a shutter release if the focus is off. Just guessing, but there could be reasons other than a shutter failure.

Good luck.

once when using my old 80-200 f/2.8. The focussing was set to limit no full and I was trying to focus on someting too close for the lens. So it seemed in focus through the lens, but it was not for the cameras AF so it would not fire.

Your camera might not be 100% in focus, just check to see if you see the green dot in the viewfinder on the left hand side.

I have had this happen many times on my D80 with 18-200. I never knew which was causing the problem because it was rare. I don't believe it ever happened with my primes but I don't use them as much so I can't say for certain it wasn't the camera.

I found the only solution was to manual focus, take a pic, and then return to auto focus and things were fine. Every time that worked. I never sent the camera or lens in to get it looked at.

The same thing happened to me once yesterday while shooting a wedding. Although it only did it the one time it made me cautious about it for the rest of the evening. I had my back up D300 ready just in case the D700 called it quits. I hope it wasn't a warning of a major fault about to happen...I've only had the camera 7 days. Oh and I am using Sandisk Extreme CF cards.

I concur with the others who point the finger at an out-of-focus condition being a possible culprit. The default settings for single-servo mode (manual p284) has the shutter locked when the autofocus system thinks the subject isn't in perfect focus. Especially at wide focal lengths the focus may be fine yet the autofocus is fooled into thinking it's not, even though it's displaying the dot indicating it is in proper focus. Frankly, I don't like a camera to make such decisions for me - when I hit the button I want the camera to fire even if its little brain thinks I don't know what I'm doing - so the first thing I did when I got the camera was set it to "release priority" so it fires regardless of focus condition.

I had the same issue with a 28-70 on my D2x. I sent the lens in and Nikon fixed the problem under warranty. That was over a year ago and the problem has not come back.
