When and why to use a hood?

I think sometimes folks get fooled by the term "sun shade." But as you describe, it's the intensity of the light source(s) that is key. This can happen in daylight (of course), but also at night, indoors, in the shade, at a club, over the river, and through the woods!

I also think it's very important to use one when shooting macros (sunlit or artificially lit)...
