I think you have got good advice here. The 70-300 VR is a keeper, even when you get bigger and better and more specialized gear. I found the Sigma 50-150/2.8 to be an interesting (and relatively affordable) alternative for shorter range action shooting, and I would also draw your attention to the 80-400 VRII that Nikon has patented, and is expected a bit sooner rather than very much later. The current version isn't handy and fast enough for your need, I think, but check out the updated version when it comes.

If you make a lot of money, the Sigma 120-300/2.8 could also be an interesting alternative later on. With a 1.4x TC, you have a 170-420/4 zoom that handles quite well, and in a pinch, you can even put a 2x TC on it to get that rather special 240-600/5.6.

But I think the best standard recipe for good IQ and long reach on a budget is the 300/4 AF-S + 1.7x TC.
