How many of you FX owners occasionally use your DX mode?

I really do not see any need to do so...

Yes, I bought my D700 recently and I'm still using my DX Sigma 10-20 lens with it for the moment although I did finally order a 16-35vr F4 lens last week.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the new lens compares with the Sigma!

Here's a few from the D700 and Sigma 10-20. All shot in DX crop mode apart from the last one:

I occasionally do time-lapse sequences with the D700 and the Nikon 10.5mm fisheye.

The small 5 MP NEF files are a lot quicker to work with than the full 12 MP files, and since the end result is 2 MP or smaller they provide more than enough resolution.

I use the DX mode on my D3s for only one reason - 11 fps!

I however occasionally use the 1.2x crop mode. That crop mode supply 8,4 MP files. The greater coverage of the AF points is a real benefit and an alternative to using the FX mode and cropping in post.

The D4, coming in 2011, might be equipped with a sensor with 16, 18 or even 24 MP. Then the 1.2x crop mode will become more interesting providing us with 11, 12,5 or 16,5 MP. An extra plus would be if Nikon could manage to raise the fps in the 1.2x crop mode to 10 fps over the 9 fps in the FX mode.

I just use my DX camera
Just curious how many of you D700/D3 owners use your cam with DX lenses occasionally? I of course have full frame lenses but also have some DX lenses from my DX camera that I use some. I know some will respond with something like "why would I buy a FX camera to use a DX lens on it......save your energy if thats what your thinking because thats not my point.

I was originally thinking of getting the D300s and while its a great camera I'm so glad I forked up the money for the D700. I'm finding the ability to go back and forth from DX to FX is priceless. Its like having a extremely good low light DX D300s and D700 FX in one body. For those that are in limbo between the 300s and 700 just remember you can switch between DX and FX.

I just shoot in full frame mode and crop what comes out. "Don't ever throw anything away before you have to..." - Jeff Hall

Never have I used my D700 in DX. One of the reasons I got the D700, was to sell my 12-> 24 and enjoy my 17-> 35 as it was met to be.

I have cropped shots, but that is for a different posting.

I've shot a few concerts from the front of the stage with an 18-105 on my D700. These shots are destined for web pages, not big prints, so I don't mind the loss of MP. And I don't have an FX lens that comes close to this range.

I've used a TC with DX lenses to cover the frame - But I rarely do that now, since I have so few Dx lenses (11-16 and 18-200)

I use my 11-16 but not in DX mode - as it covers the full frame at 16 which is a touch wider than on my d200.

Tried DX crop, shooting speeches and quality wasn't an issue
the switch over can be fiddly if you are in a hurry.
It is just as easy to crop in post

Its handy for shooting large quantaties of small objects for small repro sizes and you have forgotten ypur macro lens! and your client is looking at the shots on your laptop as they are loading up

I used the DX mode only once. I was taking photos of butterflies in flight and DX mode gave me 11fps on my D3.

It was purely an experiment, and I concluded that the difference between 9fps and 11fps was not significant, but the field of view reduction was. In particular, flying butterflies are very difficult to keep in the viewfinder.

So I have not used it again.
