7D extreme focusing issues

Just like I said empty barrels make the most noise. You don't remember anything about me because I never had a bad attitude. You can go dig it out. Also, I’m glad I keep bringing it up because it is forcing some of you to behave. So far so good until you showed up.
If you let it drop and stopped whining about it at every given opportunity then I'm sure your ordeal would soon be forgotten about Amobi.

I seem to remember you having a pretty bad attitude, which irked several people.

But anyway, this thread isn't about you, it's about the OP, so please leave the self-pity at the door fella ;)

Zzzz, whatever pal, you've already shown your colours.

Like I said, lets leave it at that, it's not your thread, and it's not your issue. Unless of course you can add something constructive. I see only one of us has made an attempt to help, and it aint you pal ;)

Probably best mate, from your description it does sound fairly out of whack.

Let us know how it goes ;)

To me, it sounds like you are running into the center-point low f-stop large aperature high preceision AF issue. Essentially means - when using low f-stop ie: 2.8 or smaller, and Center Point AF, the high -precision AF is used on the 7D. BUT, if light is not bright enough, consistent focusing is poor. If light is plentiful, then the high precision AF works great and better than non-high precision. This happens on all f2.8 and larger apertures. FIX - is to use non-center point.

Possible other fix is to use SPOT AF and not Single Point, but this has not yet be tested.

Hence, you should Not use center point when MA'ing (micro adjust) your fast lens unless done in very bright light.

there are a few threads on this in both the 7d/5d/1d and Canon Lens.

Can't help you with the focus problem because you haven't provided enough info. Might be a hardware problem; might be user error. Can't tell from the info provided.

As for the focus point illumination issue, see page 213 of the manual -- VF display illumination.

When you release the shutter be careful not to touch with your thumb any of the buttons on the top-right of the camera.
No joke at all!!!

I've had my 7D for about a month now, shot 1000 exposures with a host of different lenses and have run into some crazy, unforgivable focus issues. It seems a good 20% of the time the camera will completely and utterly botch the focus; it doesn't matter what lens, what focus mode. It will, of course, give the focus confirmation and take the shot, meaning it thinks it's in focus, and checking the confirmed focus points afterward shows it marking the "correct" spots.

I've micro-adjusted all my lenses, though it's not that: we aren't talking about consistently soft, we are talking about a bunch of sharp shots and then one or two completely off. I've shot with these lenses for years on a 30D and run into none of these issues.

It is maddening to me that I've spent this much on a camera and it can't even achieve focus. Should I send it in? I can post some sample pictures later.

Your description matches my experience with my copy of the 7D over the last few months, some superb results and some very poor, without an obvious pattern.

It was most noticeable with my 300 f4 L IS so I sent it to a my canon agent to be checked over and re-calibrated.

They then asked for some images showing the problem (plus some with the same lens but on my 50D on which had no such problems).

I have just been informed that the problem is with the 7D focusing mechanism and not the lens, so will be sending miy copy of the 7D of for inspection / work under warranty.

I'll let you know what the outcome is.

(by the way, no images as this isn't an anti-7D comment and I make enough money from selling my images to be commfortable with my technique ;) )
