Why did Olympus stop making the excellent C-8080?

One thing not mentioned

All the answers are true as written above. At the time a affordable alternative to the high priced Dslr with comparable IQ made sense. Now they don't.

Not only did the DSLR become affordable but it gave OLY the chance to sell more lenses. Something that was a limitation with the 8080.

With the 8080, you could but two conversion lenses, a adapter, a grip and a flash. After that, you were done. (there is a underwater case but most wouldn't consider it)

Meanwhile, the lenses, converters, flashes etc that you can buy for a dslr are much more expanded, not to mention upgrading.

Using me as a example. I spent a $2000 on the 8080 and ALL of its accessories. My Dslrs gear has cost ten fold of that.

The 8080 was/is a wonderful camera that I suggest to people if they can find them. I still use mine with a FL 40 from time to time and the results are always stunning. I really missed the silent mode when I was touring the castles in England and Ireland.
