Challenge 4 - CHAT - Black and White

It has to do with the way the web server is setup (mime set?). It's not your problem. Some servers have this set to try and keep people from downloading the image, a sort of copy protection thing.

-jason m
I find that quite a few entrants are uploading images
in a bmp format which requires me to do a save as jpg
on my end and also requires me to set the compression
to get under the 200kb size restriction. I am sure people
would be much better of to do their own modifications to
their images. I'd prefer to not have to downsample any of
the images to have them meet the challenge criteria..

Thanks All
Sid

But this doesn't seem to be the issue here. I was able to go in and save a few of those on your BMP list without issue. Try using Netscape 7 or Mozilla ( http://www.mozilla.org ), they are better web browsers then IE anyway.

I don't think they would be links to the thumbnails
because the sizes are correct, I figured it was some
kind of web server issues because the camera shoots
in jpg and there is no need to convert to bmp unless
you want to do lossless editing..

Sid,

Not only did I upload a jpg, not a bmp, but it also was not 1400 KB.

I'll do some digging.

It's a web server issue, funny thing is it's happening to
only a few people. I'm converting and re-saving as we

It appears that you have entered two times, I believe
the first entry to be the allowable entry. I will be entering
your first picture in the gallery, unless someone decides
that the second entry can replace the first entry.

First entry - OK -

Second entry - Not as OK -

When I download straight off the dpreview site, I get the same result you get.

However, if I go to my Pbase page,

http://www.pbase.com/image/5515326

and download from that page, without using the direct link blah-blah.jpg, the correct file and size is downloaded.

If it's MSIE, I could only find one MSKB article on the subject, but none of the solutions worked for me.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb ;EN-US;q260650

I don't have another browser to try. I'll ask a friend who has Opera to try it just to see if it's only MSIE.

I just downloaded Airbete entry with IE and
it went bmp then tried Opera and it was jpg.

Too weird.

LOL!! Having tried all of them, and some others, I'd have to say, best not make those sort of statements around here, for we surely don't need to enter that no-win situation. I know it's "popular" to knock IE, given their stature amongst the tired and few, but the fact of the matter is, there's more than one reason for that. :)

Frank (IE user)

People (including myself) are linking to the PBase image number, instead of linking to the actual image.

Go into pbase, display the image you are entering and then right click on it, select properties from the menu, the URL is different to the pbase image number. It's this URL we should link to so that the image can be saved as a .jpg by IE. To save the URL just select it, then press Ctrl and C to copy and paste that into your submit post.

I too posted a jpg at under 200K, so was suprised to see myself among the BMP's.

Hope this helps.

This is a test to prove the theory.
A direct link to the image.

And a link using the Pbase number

The top one should save as a jpg, and the bottom one as a BMP.

To Sid:

First of all, I must say I am truly won over by the amount of effort you are willing to put to run these challenges for all of us. BIG THANKS!

Now, thanks to Smee Innit (whos detective work I just took little further), I think I figured out how to download JPG from posts that refer to PBase (in IE 5.0, at least). HERE IS HOW:
1. In the post, above the image there is a link "New window". Click it.

-> the image should open in a new window, and its URL should be in the "Address" line.
In that new window:
2. highlight the "Address" line (either by mouse, or by pressing [Alt]+D)
3. Press [Enter]!!! (a necessary step, although seems like nothing happens)
4. Now, select from the menu: File/Save As ([Alt]+F,A)

-> that should open "Save Picture" dialog, and the default format should be same as the picture (i.e. JPG)

That's it, bascially. From there you should have the JPG. I tested this with my own post, and the downloaded image was identical to what I originally uploaded to PBase. Also worked with Smee's pictures - I got two identical JPEGs.

I hope it works for you too! And once more, BIG THANKS to you Sid, Michael, and Dave!

The only problem with that solution is that it goes against the PBase Help instructions for linking. They tell you to not link to their server names but to use the http://www.pbase.com ...... designation.

Additionally, Opera did not have the problem. Only MSIE did.

So I'm inclined to believe it's a MSIE problem.
  • Olga

I'm sorry, I didn't make the rules, but I did uderstand the limitations of the file size. Why not resize your picture to 600x600. It would still look great on the monitor. Or you could calculate how many pixles the image contains and then resize it so it will meet the limits in the rules.

I think we're still in the beginning of the challenge, so why should your picture be killed off... just resize it and repost under your first post. We all make mistakes!

Petra
Well, too bad for me then. Could not crop it down to 600x600 -
would kill the picture.

Next time another try.

Cheers
Reinhard

Olga,

I found a MSIE workaround a little bit ago (posted in this thread, under "Sid: HERE IS HOW"). It works with PBASE linking recommendations, which I tested on my own picture.

So if my workaround is acceptable for Sid, everyone should be able to post as recommended by PBASE.
