Is this "magic" the same as the Foveon "3D effect" that can only be seen by people who own the cameras but not proven or shown to anyone outside the group?

I could turn your statement around. If only owners can see the magic, I guess it's only people who are bitter about not owning one who shout about every flaw.

I do it myself. I gripe about the M9 not having 1/8000 shutter speed. Yes, I'd miss it - but it's also what I tell myself to make myself feel better about not being able to afford it!

Honestly, it's not exactly fair for people to judge a camera they have never owned. You only know "magic" when you see it in your own shots, are familiar with your own style, and know what you're getting out of the camera. I've never owned a Foveon camera, so it would be safe to say that my opinion on it's image quality wouldn't count for much.

And at the end of the day, we don't have to prove anything to each other. I'm exceedingly happy with my M8 and have been since the day I bought it. Safe to say it's the best camera for me I have ever owned. You might feel the same about the R-D1... and while I enjoyed the Epson, when it came down to it, I chose to keep the M8 and sell the R-D1.

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.
