I follow the Challenges for a while and notice many strange voting habits.

Some cheats are blatent and are caught by their sheer greed. Others add a couple of 5 stars to their submissions everytime it is time to vote. Hard to detect but the pattern becomes obvious over time. they still don't win so what is the point?

I won't name names but you know who you are and you should stop before you are caught and shamed. You only cheat yourself. Just because another does it it is no excuse for you.Your scores mean nothing as they are tainted. What is wrong with you that you need to do this. You think this makes you a better photographer than you are but you are not, only a cheat. Cheat is not better than honest entrant that finish last.

I don't get it either, but this have me curious:
Others add a couple of 5 stars to their submissions everytime it is time to vote
I thought it is impossible to vote for yourself? No?

I think that it is with your own ID - although I've never tried! :D

It's been suggested quite a few times that people have alternate IDs or Sock Puppets though. Or at an even more basic level, have friends that vote for them regularly.

Why Cheat?
Why Steal?
It's all about human greed.
Human greed is everywhere ... from selling stocks, funds.
Anything to get them to the front of the queue.

Why should a photochallenge be the exception?

In this instance though there is no material gain. Cheating to make yourself feel better about your photography is pretty pointless.

I thought it is impossible to vote for yourself? No?
Under the screen ID that you submitted the image with, but you could have a work e-mail with a different ID associated with it or you could set an ID up with your wife's e-mail account, your kid. And I suspect that just as easily as voting against others you can pad your own scores if you had a mind to, making the gap between an honest image greater than one voted on dishonestly.

Bart - it just never occur people would stoop so low as to create multiple different accounts to pad their score. I'm going to assume that person who won the Macro challenge by padding his score must have created more than 10+ to push himself to the top.
What I find it very sad is that according to dpreview
We banned 239 accounts yesterday for placing multiple votes on the same entries.
That has got me to think, those are just the one that has been caught. What about the rest. I wonder how much more?

The only good thing is that I don't feel so bad with my lowly 32% rating now ;-)

I was going to say one in every crowd, but 239 ? Sad. Some people just have to win in expense of others. Hmmm, hope they are not the same bunch that pounds their chests about morality or 'doing the right thing'.

It wasn't 239 people, it was 239 accounts.

Yes, but at least cheat at something that garners a genuine reward! LOL

Seriously, cheating to place high in a dpreview challenge results in what...telling people on the relevant gear forum how well you placed? It's not like results of these challenges are something worth putting on a resume or submitting to a client or stock service.

Great big LOL at those whose egos are so fragile they resort to such a thing.

Some people operate cameras. Others use them to create images. There is a difference.

If your photo wins a challenge (cheater or not) its more likely you will get more clicks, more profile views, which can in turn lead to more visits to those peoples web sites.... which can lead to selling images.

Not saying its a terribly efficient method, but it does provide a possible motivation.

That's a possible motivation. Sales and ego stroking site visits.

Anyone buying them might try and pass them off as their own. The cheaters cheater. :)

Personally I'd only put up my own pictures on my walls and scant few at that, maybe an iconic image or an image made by a close friend.

I am curious. If they kill accounts that all have the same IP address what about the situation in my office. We have 26 machines in there and all behind a router with a static IP. Everyone downstream of the router has a house IP of 192.168.0.100, 101, 102, etc but to the outside world it would appear to be the same IP. We also have a wireless system for our marina patrons and it is behind that same router with 205 accounts. So now if all 26 machines and some from the marina were to want to sign up on DPR what would that show? And would it be fair if they all got the boot? At the same time what if all the machines behind that router decide to vote for the photo of one of their office or marina cohorts? Maybe Phil could Phil us in on this scenario.

They haven't just relied on IP address if you look at t'other thread:
We are aware of a number of people who vote for their entries multiple times using multiple accounts. We banned 239 accounts yesterday for placing multiple votes on the same entries. To keep voting fair and within the rules, you should only vote for each entry once. Please do not create extra accounts for the simple purpose of voting again. We have a system in place to detect abnormal voting patterns which we will keep an eye on.

Thanks :)
But it was definitley a vaild point to mention! :D

Without getting into the whole geographical differences and approach thing, it's been mentioned a couple of times by various posters that they have used their ranking in a DPR Challenge as an advert on their 'pro' site; mostly from the subcontinent.

It's easy to imagine on an 'About Us' page the following:
Achievements:

Twice Ranked First in International Photography Competition

Maybe Phil could Phil us in on this scenario.
Obviously I'm not Phil, but I think it would be pretty stupid of him to show his hand and reveal what methods DRP employs. I suspect IP addresses are part of a strategy. Voting patterns and history will be another aspect and probably the primary one.

Hi All,

I was out of town and did not get an opportunity to visit dpreview for a long time.

My friends told that my entry has been voted to the 1st place when I was at a work site (though I think it was quite a normal macro shot). However I am really surprised and sad to see my entry being disqualified for abnormal voting (too many 5 stars).

I had told my friends (many of them are dpreview members) about my entries since I started to submit only recently. They might have voted for me. That's the only possibility I can think of (they wont tell me).

I am extremely sorry if that had happened.
