MC-EU1 remote protocol, PalmOS remote for Coolpix

Yup... a clue.

If you consider the protocol to have Odd parity, then the data format makes much more sense!

Also, as you may have noticed, by offsetting the data values by $1C, you end up with byte values ranging from 0..99.

Yes I saw that $1C is a special value in this protocol :)

Bit 7 of each byte is the Odd parity bit, I'm right ? Yes it must be this ;)
And data is sent in BCD in the last two byte of each packet ?

But what is either more intersting to know, is if there exists or not command packet I've not found until now ? For example how to know if focus has been reach after half press ? Can focus be controlled remotely ? etc etc ;)
 
I read that this Palm O/S software works with the CP-5700. I assume that the 5700 like the 5000 has a USB only connection to the computer for image transfer. Can anyone verify this?

If the 5700 and 5000 use the same USB cable, can anyone tell me what cable (or cable combinations) are required to connect the CP-5000 to the Handspring Visor Deluxe to use this software? I have a serial cradle for the Visor which I hoped could be connected to some sort of db-9 serial to usb adapter cable.

Also is there a minimum Palm O/S operating system level required to run the software (I think mine is ver 3.1). Is there a source for these cables (price?) or do you need to make up your own?

Sorry for asking so many questions but I am excited about the possiblity of using my Visor to control this great camera!

Does anybody know if the serial SC-EW3 cable works with the 4500?

No, the USB connector provide also a RS232 serial interface ! You can use the SC-EW3 cable (for newer coolpix like 880, 990, 995, 5000, 5700,...) to provide a serial connection to the coolpix.

CoolRemote need a serial connection because a palm can't drive USB peripherical (it's not a "USB master") and some coolpix however can't be driven by USB (like 995).

On the palm you must have a straight serial cable (with male serial connector) not a crossed one (with female serial connector).

HotSync cable (cradle) is crossed (TX and RX are crossed between the palm and PC) and has a female serial connector. So you must buy either a straight cable, they are usually sold to connect the palm to a modem or build/buy a "dongle" which cross another time the TX & RX line and have the right connectors in each side.

I only tried CoolRemore with Palm OS 3.3 but it may work with 3.1. You could download POSE ( http://www.palmos.com/dev/tools/emulator/ ) and try CoolRemote on your PC if you have one ! Trying CoolRemote on the palm emulator only need the Coolpix serial cable.

There are a number of Coolpix cameras that use the 'extended' protocol... MC-EU1 / DigiSnap / CoolRemote / TheForce

Coolpix 880, 885, 990, 995, 4300, 4500, 5000, 5700

The DigiSnap can control lots of other cameras as well, via the 'standard' protocol.... Coolpix 900, 950, 700, 800, Sanyo / Olympus / Agfa with serial ports.

A very handy application - but I can't get it to work!

I've got a Coolpix 995 and a Palm IIIx and the Nikon SC-EW3 cable, also a cable for the Palm end terminating in a DB25 male connector (I've used this for connecting to a modem - so it's not a 'Null Modem' one). I've made a dongle to connect the two cables with the TX and RX lines crossed - pin1 to pin 2 on between connectors. I've also tied the RTS to the CTS lines together on each connector (but I suspect the HW handshaking is not used anyway). I've also connected the earth pin 7 on both connectors.
I get and error: 'init: not NAK' when I try to connect.

Ideas anyone, please?

The data pins on the the D25 connector are pins 2 and 3. These are the ones which should be cross connected. The only other connection required is ground on pin 7.

You shouldn't cross TX and RX one more time bevause SC-EW3 already cross them ! And however why do you need a dongle ? I just connect SC-EW3 cable and Palm modem cable together as is !

You have the correct information on you website:

"a null modem cable for the Palm or a serial Hot Sync one with a dongle that cross TX and RX"

It depends therefore, which Palm cable is used.

Great work on Coolremote 0.26 Vladimir. It just keeps getting better.

My Palm modem cable is a 25 way one - I'll probably cut it off and fit a 9 way one.

I'm managing to get a connection now, but the Palm immediately crashes with a fatal exception. I'm using Coolremote 0.22 and PalmOS 3.3 on a IIIx. I'll update to 0.26 and give it another try.
