Return it, save some cash and get the 180mm AF-D f2.8 ..

Agreed. It is easier to use the 180mm f/2.8 . I have the 105DC, Sigma 150mm f/2.8 and Nikon 180mm f/2.8 . The 105DC is hard to use wide open and is very soft and low contrast in strong backlighting. Though, I do have some pix that were sharp at f/2 under lighting conditions which I would generally (but not accurately) describe as most of the frame is 3/4 tone or less.

If you want sharp wide open, definitely get the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 . It is much sharper than the Nikon 180mm f/2.8 .

I've also read that the DC lenses should be used in a DC position all of the time, but I can not confirm that myself.

Also, keep in mind that focusing with an f/2 lens is challenging. Between the two, I'd say that the 85mm f/1.4 is much easier to use to get sharper/focused results at f/2 and f/2.8 .
