I haven't read all the responses here so I apologise if I'm repeating stuff.

Much of what you say is probably relevant for someone starting with nothing but you already have a K-7 and you talk of the Sigma 10-20 for a D40: why not just get one for your K-7?

If you want a second body to share with your girlfriend (as opposed to selling the K-7 and replacing it with something new) surely the logical thing is to get a K-x so that all your lenses are interchangable?

I agree that the Nikon flash system beats Pentax, although for me it's not a big issue because I don't take flash on holiday. Obviously styles of shooting differ so I'm not saying flash isn't important for you; but this is what I managed in Venice with K-7 and three lenses (including the Sigma 10-20)
