If the context is noise, the D3000 shot is underexposed by 2/3 of a stop relative to the D40 shot. Also, the lighting is different between the two because the shadows are not quite the same. Something else to consider is that the D3000 is four stops above base ISO at 1600, whereas the D40 is only three stops above base ISO.

You have right about the light, exposer and ISO in that images, but i've done myself a lot of test with this two cameras and in real life the D40 is better (except shuter lag).
