How to set the camera so it won't set the shutter way too low and cause blur from shake that even IS can't deal with.

Many consumer 35mm cameras (not SLRs) had a "camera shake warning" light that would blink whenever it determined the shutter speed was too slow for the focal length. The manual recommended that you use a tripod or a flash if this light starts blinking. Handy!

A lot of the consumer 35mm cameras with slow built-in zoom lenses were nice and did a pretty good job at letting people take good photos without reading a thick manual. They fell out of favor when APS and digital cameras came along.
