That sounds like a good option. I'm used to having my 35mm prime lens on so that is wide enough for my needs. I'll looking into it.

If you want a Nikon brand lens that is similar, there is also the 35-70 2.8. Not quite as wide, but that won't matter for sports or portrait as you are planning to use it. This used to be Nikon's premium photo-journalism lens 2 generations ago (before the 28-70 f2.8). You can get them on the used market for $350-450.

It won't really get you much over the Tamron, but if you feel more comfortable with buying Nikon then it's not a bad deal at all.
