Is it possible to use non genuine Sony batteries in this camera, or would it be unsafe to use other makes. There are a lot of cheaper third batteries for sale, but I wonder if this is a false economy

HX5 uses the very old BG1/BF1 batteries which have been around for many years.
There are plenty of cheap and reliable 3rd party batteries around.

You should not be worried using these unless you are very unlucky to get bad ones, as long as you get it from reputable seller.

Most 3rd party batteries I've bought have not had as good a life as the originals, including one I bought for my HX5v

don't forget: you get 10-15 pieces 3rd party for ONE original!

I'm waiting for 3rd party for TX7 ... s.h.i.t ... I dislike to pay 50-80 $ for original :-|

I got a replacement battery from 7dayshop.com for £4.99 \0/

Am gonna need it to, only took 170 pics and about 10 mins of video today before the battery was flat ):

Prejudice is ignorance

Canon 400D with Sigma DC 17-70(ace) and Tamron 55-200(not so ace)

I just received it and the battery is not an original Sony battery. It is for the HX5, but I don't know who made it. It was made in China.
I ordered a Sony G NP-BG1 from USB phone World. It was $16.95 + $7.95 shipping for a total of $24.70. I don't know if that is a particularly good price with shipping, but it did not seem too bad.

Here is the link.

A good example of "caveat emptor". If you look at the picture of the battery it does not say "SONY" while a genuine Sony battery does.. The ad only states that it is FOR Sony cameras.

Unfortunately in these days, even the presence of the word "Sony" on the battery does not guarantee that it's genuine. However, the ABSENCE of the brand name DOES guarantee that it's not.

There is nothing wrong with that.

People will be stupid if they think they are getting genuine Sony battery if they pay $5 or $10 for it.

At $24 bucks delivered I did not think it was a "to good to be true" price. Also, it says:

"Get extra clicks from your Digital camera with NP-BG1 Lithium-ion Rechargeable Battery Pack from Sony."

As the old adage goes: "If it seems to good to be true, it probably isn't!"

I found the picture of the battery too blurred to be sure and I have seen differences in OEM batteries I purchased separately from the one that came in the camera. . Also, you should read the add again. It also, says: "Get extra clicks from your Digital camera with NP-BG1 Lithium-ion Rechargeable Battery Pack from Sony."

No that is not "too good to be true" price. But beware that there are too many "fakes" (may not be bad as many 3rd party batteries now are just as god as original ones) even the sellers genuinely believe they are selling originals when in fact they were sold "fakes".

Even Amazon was found to sell fakes items purported to be genuine.

The free battery doesn't display the amount of shots left over but I heard there is an optional battery that does display that info. Anyone know which model battery that is and if there are any knock off companies that have that capability?

Could that be because you used the 3rd party units more (because of cheaper replacement cost) and kept the brand name ones mainly in reserve?

The HX5V has been available only about 1 month. Have you exhausted some cells already? How many charge cycles?

He was just referring to 3rd party batteries in general and it it generally true.
They usually deteriorate faster from 6-12 months onwards.

While you can expect the original battery to last 3 years and start to deteriorate (reduced capacity) from 12 months, 3rd party usually last 1.5-2 years.

Original BG1 battery supplied with HX5V does not display info. Optional BF1 does.

If you buy 3rd party BF1 compatible, it will display info.

There are more BF1 compatible batteries than BG1 on sale and there is usually no price difference.

I have just purchased a battery from 7dayshop for £4.99 delivered, any good?
