Canon's answer to Nikon's 14-24mm is coming...

Canon takes pride in having the most comprehensive array of lenses in the market. Whenever Canon sees a competitor enjoy great success with a particular lens design... they have always reacted by making one of their own. It doesn't happen overnight; it takes a while for a lens to go from R&D stage to store shelves. In fact, the entire process seems to take them almost exactly 3 years:

2003: Nikon introduces 17-55 f/2.8 DX
2006: Canon follows with EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS

2004: Nikon introduces 200mm f/2.0 VR
2007: Canon revives the 200mm f/2.0 IS lens

2005: Nikon introduces the 18-200 VR superzoom
2008: Canon follows with the 18-200 IS superzoom

2006: Nikon introduces the 105mm Micro VR
2009: Canon follows with the 100mm Macro IS

2007: Nikon introduces the 14-24mm f2.8 lens
2010: ? ? ? Guess what will happen ? ? ?

I'm certain that Canon's response to the immensely popular Nikkor 14-24mm lens will be introduced alongside the 1Ds Mark IV at Photokina this year. I'm hoping it'll be closer to a 12-24mm f4.5L lens than a 14-24mm f2.8L...
