I think it's reasonable to use some kind of protection, like the free ClamXAv.

But there is a rather large body of Mac user experience that says
DO NOT LET NORTON NEAR YOUR MAC.

It causes performance problems, and instability, and I don't even know if they still make a version compatible with the latest OS X. Everything I've read says that you have got to try something other than Norton on the Mac.
