Canon firmware only to "fix" problems?

I would think that the hardware limitation would be bandwidth, ie the speed of access to memory. Regardless of your buffer size you will eventually lose out if the bandwidth of the memory bus the SD card isn't good enough to support h264 1080p video at 30 hz.

Of course it could be processing, too much data to churn through fast enough for 30hz consistently at 1080p. Really 24hz would be good enough, if you ask me, as that's fine via the bluray spec, and what most film makers want anyway. 20 always seemed odd to me.
