I came across a package at a pawn shop and I'm wondering if anyone would like to comment on general IQ of these lenses:

35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 Ai-s mount
70-210mm 1:4 f/4 62mm
TC-201

For $150 you get the above as well as: FA 35mm body, MD-15 motor drive and a SB-16 speedlight.

I'm thinking this might be a steal. I'd probably Ebay the body and motor drive. (But it might be fun to shoot a little film)

This would be for a D90 (to add to a Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 SP XR Di II LD).

Any issues I should be aware of?

To get all of that for $150 is a very good deal. You could probably turn around and sell most of it and make a profit. The FA plus MD15 is easily worth more than that.

I had the 35-105 Ai-S once upon a time. Although it is very compact, I found it hard to focus (even with a split-image prism) because it was dark and only requires a 90 degree twist to go from minimum distance to infinity.

I don't have any experience with the other equipment. People that have the 70-210 F4 seem generally very happy with it. The FA/MD15 is a semi-pro body (same as the D200/D300 in the current Nikon lineup). I have an FM2 and FE2, which use the same body style, and I am very happy with them.

I don't think those lenses will offer the same IQ you get with your Tamron and with a D90 you'll have no metering.
Might still be worth picking up and trying out for yourself at that price.

I have used the 70-210 f/4 Series-E lens for about two years on my D200, it is optically better than the old 75-300 AF Nikkor, and about equal in quality to the f4.5-5.6 70-210 AF Nikkor.

cheers,

Philipp

the 70-210 f4 is a great lens. I wish I hadn't sold mine as it is a good travel lens. The only problem is acquisition time doesn't compare with the afs lenses of today.
