improving my birds in flight shots?

Yesterday I visited Tiengemeten, an island that is being returned to nature. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiengemeten ) load of birds there so I had a chance to put in some practice shooting birds in flight.

I am not 100% happy with the results. I used a 70-300VR on a D300. Lot of shots in "full auto" AF mode. Since throwing money at a better lens is not an option right now I'd be really grateful for suggestion how I can improve my shooting and post processing.

Here's a few examples.
common shellduck

Not at all happy with those two.

This one, barnacle goose, is a bit better.

as are these mute swans.

this falcon is mediocre
