Certainly there are time when it might make sense to have a "protective filter" in place, but I'd argue that this is a rare occasion, and that you'd be best off not having a filer on the lens most of the time. And I agree about salt spray. But if you have a filter installed, you still have to clean it. If you remove it, then you have lost your "protection". So it is not that useful unless you have a pocket of filters. A large microfiber cloth and small bottle of distilled water do great for salt spray.

I encounter mud at MotoCross races, but it is almost never an issue. And the water/microfiber cloth take care of that as well.
