Alternatives to 24-105mm on the 5D

So I have the 50D as well as 5D, the former mostly for wildlife, the latter -- which I recently bought and love -- as a general purpose camera.

I've owned the EFS 17-55mm, Tamron 24-135, both of which I've sold.

I know the 24-105 would be the safe, logical choice to be used on both cameras. However, I would like to explore other options. In my research so far I've drawn the following observations:

  • Tamron 28-75: although everyone speaks highly of this, it is horrible in ISO chart comparisons on website. Is the comparison flawed?

  • Canon 24-85 and Canon 28-105mm: both are spoken of well, particularly the latter, but the Canon 24-85 comes across as the sharper lens in the ISO comparisons.

  • Canon 28-135: it's not a bad lens in relative terms. Not sure if 28mm is wide enough for me even on a 5D.

  • Sigma 24-70 (non HSM): softer than the 24-105 even at f4 and has no IS.

  • Canon 17-40: wide angle for both cameras, but the range is too short.

I'm sure lots of you have gone through a similar decision making process and would like to hear your thoughts.
