Why do I hear that virtually no "pro" uses a mid range zoom?

Is it just not creative enough of a focal range? Or is there a general quality issue in this range? I ask because i want to buy the 24-70 2.8, but that is serious scratch to put down and then have remorse. So I am considering the 16-35 f4 VR, but I'm scared that will be too wide for serious time on my camera. Just thinking out loud. I have some spare cash from a bonus and would like to buy a super high quality lens as a treat because up until now all my lenses are budget buys.

I have:
Nikon 28-85 AFS
Sigma 15-30
Nikon 50 1.8
Tamron 28-75 2.8 (older model without internal motor)

If I get the 24-70, I would sell the 28-85 and the Tamron too.

I shoot a D700 and mainly take pictures of my kids around the house and stuff like that.

Thanks for your input.
